Quick answer
Turning Wrenches handles tire replacement, rotation, tire pressure monitoring (TPMS) service and wheel inspection for Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, MINI, Porsche and Sprinter vehicles at 1304 N English Station Rd in Louisville, KY. We match tires to your car’s manufacturer approval marking and size, including staggered and run-flat setups, and same-day service is often available at (502) 821-3180.
What our tire and wheel service covers
Tires are the only part of your car that touches the road, and on a European car they are engineered as part of the chassis rather than treated as a commodity. Our tire and wheel service is built around that idea. We handle:
- Tire replacement, with mounting and balancing on your factory or aftermarket wheels
- Tire rotation where your car’s tire setup allows it
- Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) diagnosis, sensor replacement and relearn or reset
- Tread depth, wear pattern and tire age checks, with an honest read on how much life is left
- Inspection of punctures, sidewall bulges and bent or cracked wheels
- Wheel bolts torqued to factory specification with a torque wrench
Because tire wear is usually a symptom of something else, we look past the tire itself. Uneven wear often points to an alignment that has drifted or a worn suspension part, so a tire visit is a good time to check both. If your car needs it, we can follow up with a four-wheel alignment on the same visit.
Signs your tires or wheels need attention
- Tread worn near the wear bars, or wear that is heavier on the inside or outside edge
- A TPMS or tire pressure warning that comes back after you add air
- A vibration in the steering wheel or seat at highway speed
- The car pulling to one side on a straight, level road
- A bulge or cut in the sidewall, often after hitting a pothole or curb
- Cracking in the sidewall or between tread blocks on tires that are several years old, even with good tread depth
- More road noise or a rhythmic hum that changes with speed
A vibration that starts at highway speed is often a balance problem rather than a tire problem. Our wheel balancing page explains the difference.
Why European cars are particular about tires
Most European manufacturers test tires with tire makers and approve specific models for specific cars. Approved tires carry a marking on the sidewall. A tire with the right size but without the approval will fit, but it may not have the sidewall stiffness, noise level or wet grip the car’s suspension and stability systems were tuned around.
| Brand | Approval marking on the sidewall |
|---|---|
| BMW & MINI | Star symbol (✱) |
| Mercedes-Benz | MO, MO1, or MOE for extended-mobility (run-flat) tires |
| Audi | AO, with RO1 or RO2 on some RS models |
| Porsche | N-rating, such as N0, N1 or N2 |
| Sprinter & Metris | Load-rated light-truck or commercial tires that meet the door-placard load index |
We look up your original fitment and approval before ordering, then give you choices that suit how you drive, whether that is quiet all-season tires for a daily commute or summer performance tires for a weekend car.
Staggered setups and run-flat tires
Many BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche models run wider tires in the rear than the front. That staggered setup means tires can’t be moved front to rear, so the rear tires typically wear out sooner and are often replaced as a pair. Many BMW and MINI models, and some Mercedes-Benz models, also came from the factory with run-flat tires and no spare. If you are thinking about switching to conventional tires for a softer ride, we’ll talk through what you would carry instead in the event of a flat.
All-wheel drive needs matched tires
Audi quattro, BMW xDrive, Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC and Porsche all-wheel-drive systems expect all four tires to turn at nearly the same speed. A single new tire next to three worn ones has a larger outside diameter, and the drivetrain sees that difference on every mile. Over time it can stress the transfer case, center differential or coupling. Depending on the remaining tread on the others, we may recommend replacing tires as a full set or in axle pairs. If your all-wheel-drive car already shudders or binds in tight turns, see our CV and drive axle service.
TPMS: direct and indirect systems
Some European models monitor tire pressure indirectly, by comparing wheel speeds through the ABS sensors. Others use a battery-powered sensor inside each wheel. Both need attention after tire work. An indirect system must be reset at the correct pressures, or it will learn the wrong baseline. A direct system may need sensors relearned, and the sensors themselves eventually fail as their internal batteries run down. Our brand-specific diagnostic equipment reads the TPMS module directly, so we can tell a failed sensor from a slow leak or a system fault instead of guessing.
How a tire service works at Turning Wrenches
- Check your current setup. We confirm sizes, load and speed ratings, approval markings and whether you are on run-flats or a staggered fitment.
- Inspect wear and wheels. We read the wear pattern, check tire age, and look for bends, cracks and curb damage on each wheel.
- Quote clear options. You get an itemized estimate with tire choices that fit your car and budget. Nothing is ordered or replaced without your approval.
- Mount and balance. Tires are mounted with care for low-profile sidewalls and finished wheels, then balanced.
- Torque and set pressures. Wheel bolts are torqued to specification and pressures set to your door placard for your load.
- Reset or relearn TPMS. We make sure the warning system is working and calibrated before the car leaves.
Louisville roads are hard on low-profile tires
Large wheels and short sidewalls look and handle the way they do because there is less rubber between the wheel and the road. That also means less cushion when you find a pothole on I-64, I-264 or a side street after a freeze-thaw cycle. Sidewall bulges and bent inner wheel barrels are common after a hard hit, and both are worth checking even if the car seems to drive fine. Louisville’s temperature swings matter too: tire pressure drops as the weather turns cold, so a TPMS light on the first chilly morning of fall is often just low pressure rather than a failed sensor.
What tire and wheel work costs
Tire prices vary widely by size, approval marking and type, so we quote each job individually rather than posting a single number. Our new-customer offer to beat a written, itemized dealer quote by 20% (up to $1,000 off) does not apply to tire replacements. It can apply to related repairs such as suspension or steering parts that caused uneven wear, so bring the dealer quote and we’ll tell you what qualifies. See all current offers for details.
Why choose Turning Wrenches for tires and wheels
We work only on European vehicles, so we know which models are staggered, which came on run-flats, which use indirect TPMS and how each brand wants its wheels torqued. Our technicians are master-certified, we use OEM-quality parts, and most qualifying repairs carry a 36-month / 36,000-mile nationwide TECHNET warranty. If a tire visit turns up a worn control arm or tie rod, our suspension and steering team is in the same building.
