Quick answer
Mercedes-Benz Service A on a 2024 GLE 580 4MATIC is $195 at Turning Wrenches versus $399 quoted by Mercedes-Benz of Louisville, and Service A on a 2023 Sprinter 1500 Diesel 2WD is $454 here versus $805 (dealer quotes obtained by phone on 11/26/2025; prices vary by model). Take factory warranty repairs and recalls to the dealer, where they are done at no charge; for Service A and B and out-of-warranty repairs, Turning Wrenches offers OEM Mercedes-Benz diagnostic equipment, master-certified technicians and OEM-quality parts for less.
Mercedes-Benz of Louisville and Turning Wrenches, briefly
Mercedes-Benz of Louisville is the factory-authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer serving Louisville. Its service department performs Mercedes-Benz factory warranty repairs and safety recall work. Turning Wrenches European Auto Repair is an independent shop that has worked exclusively on European vehicles since 2013, including every Mercedes-Benz car and SUV line plus Sprinter and Metris vans.
The comparison below covers two very different Mercedes-Benz owners: someone driving a luxury SUV, and a business running a Sprinter. The answer is similar for both, and the numbers are real.
Two Service A quotes, compared
We asked Mercedes-Benz of Louisville for the price of Service A on two specific vehicles and priced the identical service ourselves.
| Vehicle | Service | Turning Wrenches | Mercedes-Benz of Louisville | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 580 4MATIC | Service A | $195 | $399 | $204 (51%) |
| 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 1500 Diesel 2WD | Service A | $454 | $805 | $351 (44%) |
Vehicles and service: 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 580 4MATIC, Service A; 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 1500 Diesel 2WD, Service A. Dealer quotes obtained by phone on 11/26/2025; prices vary by model. Other models, engines and visit contents will price differently, so ask us for a quote on your vehicle.
Gaps like these between franchised dealers and independent specialists are common across the industry, and they come from how each business is built rather than from the service itself. A franchised dealership supports new-vehicle sales, a showroom and manufacturer facility standards alongside its service department. An independent shop devoted to repair carries a smaller cost base and can concentrate its investment on diagnostic equipment and technician training. As a result, our prices are often around 20% below local dealers, and on these two Service A visits the difference was larger.
Service A, Service B and the Flexible Service System
Modern Mercedes-Benz cars, SUVs and vans use the Flexible Service System, which alternates between Service A and Service B. On most passenger models the reminder comes up roughly every 10,000 miles or once a year, whichever arrives first.
- Service A centers on synthetic oil and filter replacement with MB-approved oil, fluid level checks, a tire and brake inspection, and a reset of the service indicator.
- Service B includes the Service A items and adds work such as cabin air filter replacement and a brake fluid exchange.
- Additional items such as spark plugs, air filters, transmission fluid and coolant come due on their own intervals. See our preventive maintenance page for how we track them.
We perform both services with OEM brand-specific Mercedes-Benz diagnostic equipment, which reads every control module and resets the maintenance counter correctly. Oil is matched to your engine’s MB approval, such as 229.5 or 229.71, and parts are OEM quality. Our oil change service page explains those approvals in more detail.
For Sprinter owners and fleets
For a business, a van’s maintenance cost repeats across every vehicle and every visit, and so does the time it spends off the road. Sprinter diesels also have systems a passenger-car shop may rarely see: diesel particulate filters, SCR emissions systems that use AdBlue (diesel exhaust fluid), glow plugs and low-ash oil to MB 229.51 or 229.52.
We service Sprinter and Metris vans with the same OEM Mercedes-Benz diagnostic equipment we use on the cars, and same-day service is often available. New customers get $79 off any Sprinter service or repair. Fleet managers can find van-specific details on our Sprinter and Metris repair page.
When the dealer is the better choice
Go to Mercedes-Benz of Louisville for
Repairs covered by the Mercedes-Benz factory warranty and open safety recalls, both of which the dealer performs at no charge. If your vehicle came with prepaid or included maintenance, use that there as well.
Come to Turning Wrenches for
Service A and B you are paying for yourself, out-of-warranty repairs, van fleet maintenance, and a second estimate on a costly repair, with OEM Mercedes-Benz diagnostics and OEM-quality parts, often for around 20% less.
To see whether your car or van has an open recall, enter its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Keeping your factory warranty safe
Using an independent shop for maintenance does not void your Mercedes-Benz warranty. The federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act means a manufacturer can’t deny coverage simply because Service A or B was done somewhere other than a dealer. Stay on the Flexible Service System schedule, use parts and fluids that meet Mercedes-Benz specifications, and keep every invoice. If a covered part fails, the dealer still repairs it at no cost to you.
Switching is simple. Bring your service records or the last invoice, and we continue the A/B sequence from wherever your vehicle left off. Louisville conditions, from summer heat on I-71 and I-265 to winter road salt, are factored into what we recommend at each visit.
